Sad story, stupid parents

The story of Madeleine McCann is tragic and heartbreaking. I can't even imagine how I'd feel if one of my kids disappeared that way.

But I don't have much sympathy:

...Kate and Gerry went for a meal at a tapas restaurant, checking on Madeleine in their nearby apartment every half hour or so.

So they went to dinner, leaving a four year old girl in a locked apartment, in a foreign country, alone?

Can anything -- anything -- good possibly come from this scenario? What are the possibilities? Playing the bathtub and drowning? Climbing up a dresser and having it fall? Finger in an electric socket? At the very least, couldn't they hire a nanny or a babysitter to stay with the girl for the evening?

People like this are the best argument for parenting licenses!
