A Memorial Day Message

Michael Yon

"Although there is sharp fighting in Diyala Province, and Baghdad remains a battleground, and the enemy is trying to undermine security in areas they’d lost interest in, the fact is that the security plan, or so-called “surge,” is showing clear signs of progress."

Sad story, stupid parents

The story of Madeleine McCann is tragic and heartbreaking. I can't even imagine how I'd feel if one of my kids disappeared that way.

But I don't have much sympathy:

...Kate and Gerry went for a meal at a tapas restaurant, checking on Madeleine in their nearby apartment every half hour or so.

So they went to dinner, leaving a four year old girl in a locked apartment, in a foreign country, alone?

Can anything -- anything -- good possibly come from this scenario? What are the possibilities? Playing the bathtub and drowning? Climbing up a dresser and having it fall? Finger in an electric socket? At the very least, couldn't they hire a nanny or a babysitter to stay with the girl for the evening?

People like this are the best argument for parenting licenses!

Who knows. Perhaps it wasn't in the PRD.

At any rate, the posts in this blog up to this point are copied from an old blog of mine. The original has a few more posts, but the ones I've copied over here are my favorites. If you want to see the old ones, go here: My Old Blog

Dr. Helen: Transparency in Healthcare

Dr. Helen: Transparency in Healthcare

The real reason why healthcare is so expensive is that its users -- providers and consumers -- don't know how much it costs.

Insurance doesn't help the problem. In fact, it obscures the real situation. Forcing us all to buy insurance is exactly the wrong direction -- we should strive for an economy where insurance is not necessary.

How to pour ketchup

Ketchup can be regarded as a highly viscous liquid, or a thixotropic (flows under pressure) solid. Neither term is exactly correct, but the problem is not what to call it. The problem is how to get the ketchup out of the bottle, in measured quantities, without making a mess.
